Behind the Scenes:
How Teradek Live
Streamed the
Pulse
of a Music Festival
Overview
Overview
The Las Vegas Festival Grounds is a sprawling live event venue, spanning nearly 40 acres with a capacity of up to 80,000 attendees. In the midst of this vast yet concentrated expanse, where the internet connection is prone to intermittency, live streaming challenges become a foreseeable reality for any production company.
It was against this backdrop that BC Live Productions encountered a distinct challenge when tasked with delivering high quality, reliable Program feeds via live video encoders from three different stages for a music festival at this dynamic venue.
Challenge
Challenge
Utilizing the existing IT infrastructure, the goal was to transmit feeds seamlessly across diverse locations for monitoring. The complexity lay in the multipoint distribution of the feeds from these three stages, including feeds to:
- Local production offices
- Artist trailers & private event spaces
- LED Towers placed around the festival grounds
- Off-site monitoring by executives and artist management teams
With much ground to cover and a sold-out crowd of 80,000 festival-goers, sustaining high-quality and consistent streaming over multiple days posed a formidable challenge.
Solution
Solution
Using the festival network, BC Live placed a Prism Flex encoder at each stage’s control room and managed all transmission destinations using Teradek’s on-premise and cloud orchestration platform: Core. All Prism Flex devices were placed on a single VLAN and managed with Core’s on-premise Hyperion server to optimize on bandwidth by keeping everything local.
Once the Prism Flexes were installed at each stage and connected to Core, Core Workspaces were set up with security measures that assigned access to stakeholders via email and SMS. This allowed specific individuals to monitor Artists’ performances from local Production offices.
The decoder of choice was a user-friendly AppleTV4K, running the free Core TV App (now Core Share). These were placed at each Production station across the venue, and allowed the viewer to easily select which stage to monitor. The Festival Command Post also requested a custom multiview of all stages and local weather stats, which BC Live was able to create with a switcher before adding it to the Core Workspace using an additional Prism Flex encoder

Easy Monitoring for Private Spaces:
Easy Monitoring for Private Spaces:
The Private Artists’ Area received all stage signals over SRT with a multi-channel Decoder. With audio disembedded and video routed to a compact switcher, a local technician was able to easily switch between stages on multiple screens while feeding the corresponding audio mix into the PA system within the Artists' tent.
LED Tower Displays:
LED Tower Displays:
Strategically positioned across the festival grounds, the LED Towers received point-to-point transmissions via Prism Flex Decoders. This allowed tower technicians to easily weave the complete 1920x1080 transmission into their dynamic display cycle, showcasing ads, on-stage feeds, and important messages for festival-goers.
Optimized infrastructure:
Optimized infrastructure:
Centralizing all devices on a single VLAN and orchestrating management through an on-premise Core Hyperion server ensured a localized setup. Requiring only minimal Internet bandwidth for accessing Core and managing traffic efficiently, this approach effectively maintained the festival's ISP requirements at a low and budget-friendly level.
In a remarkable display of technical expertise, BC Live Productions executed a flawless transmission of Program signals across diverse stages, powered by Teradek’s Prism and Core solutions. From ensuring seamless mixing on the LED Tower displays, to the secure and streamlined monitoring solutions in Core Workspaces for stakeholders — BC Live successfully delivered an efficient and top-tier production experience, instilling confidence among show technicians and allowing everyone to concentrate on the captivating performances unfolding on stage.
